Bill Ostovich's
1977 Pontiac Can Am

Hi Peter. I really enjoy your site.
I am the second owner of my CanAm. I purchased it from a local Pontiac dealer on 12-31-79. I signed the contract 30 minutes after they closed for the year! It was the last car they sold that year. I paid $4,000 for it. It had just over 26,000 miles on it. It now has just over 125,000 miles on it. The car came with a 3:23 Safe-T-Track (posi) rear end. It has A/C, tilt wheel, bumper gaurds, and a bench seat with a column shift. It had a AM/FM stereo that I removed in favor of an aftermarket stereo but I still have the original.
I converted the exhaust to a true dual exhaust system running through the stock exhaust manifolds. The shaker scoop has been opened by drilling out the three rivets. The stock carb has been rejetted with a kit purchased from HO Racing. The turbo 400 has a B&M shift kit in it with a stock convertor. The car has wheels from American Racing on it. (sorry CanAm fans but I never liked the body color Rall II's) The rest of the running gear is stock. This combination has given me a best ET of 14.80 seconds in the quartermile.
The above holeshot photo was taken at Great Lakes Dragaway in 1987 I believe.
During the 1980's I bracket raced the car quite often. It was a very consistent car that helped me win a lot of rounds and a number of trophys. Future plans include an 068 cam, replacing the 1.62 exhaust valves with the 1.77 valves, milling the heads .030". Installing aftermarket RamAir exhaust manifolds, and possibly doing a mild porting job on the heads. Once the mods are done I would like to return to some limited racing activity but also return to going to a lot of the local cruise nights.
Thanks again, Bill Ostovich
