Horst Fiedler's
1974 Pontiac Grand Am

Horst Fiedler says...

" I've owned my '74 Grand Am 2dr. since 1977.

I bought it from a friend who special ordered it new. It was ordered as a muscle car rather than a luxury boat, so it doesn't have many power options. It has a 400 4bbl, dual exhaust, 4-speed with the optional Hurst shifter. Since it was built late in the year, it came with a BW-ST10 and HEI ignition. It has A/C, and the unusual RH remote mirror. I added the NASA hood in 1978. It has about 70,000 miles on it. It is numbers matching and still has the original Uniroyal spare tire. The body is restored, and the engine is out right now being freshened up.

A few interesting notes:

The original owner unsuccessfully argued with the dealer for a week trying to get a 455SD for the car.

The dealer made him get A/C so they wouldn't be stuck with an unsalable car if the deal fell through.

The Hurst shifter and the NASA hood were items you had to ask for since they were not well advertised.

An AM/FM/8 track cost over $400. In 1974 this would buy a top-of-the-line home stereo system. GM only offered 8-tracks even though cassettes were really beginning to catch on. For less than $200 you could get a AM/FM cassette and two 6x9 speakers, thus it was not unusual for the do-it-yourselfer to order a new car without a radio.

Thanks much!
